How to Build a Basic Gaming PC: Buying Guide!

Well then, how to build a basic gaming PC without sacrificing quality? What about a gaming model, where performance demands become more critical? This is where “as cheap as possible” becomes different from “the minimum necessary without leaving the user experience aside”, which served as the basis for setting up the configuration below. Of course, it’s possible to build a more basic configuration, but it’s necessary to scale up whether it’s worth it or not, since it’s no use building a PC that can barely run old titles. So let’s get to the list!

Processor (and Graphics card): AMD A10-7700K

Starting at the bottom, taking into account the excellent evolution of the integrated graphics of AMD APUs, we have the A10-7700K, with four cores running at 3.4 GHz (Turbo up to 3.8 GHz) and Radeon R7 integrated graphics, this one with 6 computing cores. It’s what we’d call a minimal setup for anyone looking how to build a basic gaming PC, being perfectly capable of handling MOBAs like League of Legends and Diablo III , as well as less demanding titles like Civilization V and Civilization: Beyond Earth (especially with the active Mantle).

It is possible to extract a little more performance with a modest overclock (the “K” at the end means it is an unlocked model), even with the cooler box, in addition to performing some adjustments in voltage levels and intermediate clocks so that it runs cold no great need for a more advanced cooler. We chose the A10-7700K instead of the A10-7850K because the difference between them is, basically, the factory clock, not being a justification to invest R$100 more.

RAM Memory: HyperX Fury 8 GB

The A10-7700K’s native support is DDR3 with frequencies up to 2133 MHz (may be higher depending on the motherboard). Here it is better to use two memory sticks on two channels than just one, as both the processor and the integrated GPU share the system’s RAM memory, offering direct gains in this approach. Some games can even run fine with 4GB, but we believe 8GB is the minimum to take advantage of some survival.

As we’re talking about a gamer model, models with a heatsink are always welcome, especially since the cooler box doesn’t help with cooling the system. Considering all this, the HyperX Fury 1600 is an excellent option, bringing an even affordable price in the 8 GB kit (2×4 GB) and the guarantee that it won’t fail in the first months of use, as it was designed not to overheat.

Motherboard: ASRock FM2A88M-HD+

The socket in question is the FM2+, used by the 7000 series APUs codenamed Kaveri. In this regard, the FM2A88M-HD+ is one of the best options we’ve found without giving up essential requirements, as there are models that bring only VGA video output, while this model has both DVI and HDMI. Also, the chipset in question is the A88X (Bolton D4), which allows for a good customization in UEFI for more control over the APU.

Other than that, there are several expansions available, such as PCI Express 3.0 for a later video card, taking advantage of Dual Graphics support, 8 SATA 3 connectors, six USB ports on the rear panel (2 USB 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0) and various controllers of FANs. And, of course, the motherboard only uses solid capacitors, which is extremely welcome in a gamer model.

Storage: Seagate SATA III 1TB 7200 RPM

Storage is one of the easiest components to upgrade, so a quality model at an affordable price is the best strategy here. It is worth noting, however, that it is not worth saving so much to the point of getting a model with 500 GB, since the price difference for a 1 TB model is very small. In this case, we have Seagate’s 1TB model with 7200 RPM, which also supports AcuTrac technology for greater accuracy when reading or writing data.

Power supply: EVGA 100-N1-0400-L1

One of the great advantages of a more economical configuration is that it requires little energy to run, so that simpler sources are perfectly capable of sustaining it without hurting your pocket. However, it is not worth it to save too much on generic models, or even models that cannot offer a reasonable amount of power, taking into account the natural degradation of this component.

Our choice here is the EVGA 100-N1-0400-L1, capable of delivering 400 real watts of power and backed by OVP, OPP and UVP protection and the 80 Plus seal for energy efficiency. It may seem oversized, as the above configuration draws much less power than that, but it guarantees a good safety margin for overclocking and installing extra components in the future, whether new hard drives or a more basic video card.

Case: DeepCool Smarter

With power supply support on the top (which isn’t a problem since the setup doesn’t generate as much heat), drilling for FANs on the side, rear and front region and steel construction, DeepCool’s Smarter comes at a price even very affordable. In addition to supporting the above configuration without any problems, it offers versatility when the user is considering a possible upgrade, as it has space for extra hard drives and a more sophisticated cooler, as well as bigger graphics cards in the lower region.

Final: What can be improved?

The configuration we set up is not the cheapest, since our focus here was as little as possible without sacrificing quality, in addition to providing a good margin of work for possible expansions. For example, we don’t consider the price of a third-party cooler to keep the CPU cooler, in addition to allowing a greater margin for overclocks, since it’s an unlocked CPU, and extra fans, which would be welcome for the cabinet can “breathe”.

Another point is RAM memory. Depending on the user’s focus, he can opt for a larger amount (16 GB), since the chosen motherboard has only two slots, and higher operating frequencies, which would guarantee an extra performance from the APU. On storage, it might be worth purchasing an SSD to act as the primary drive and reserving the 1TB hard drive for data, making the computer much more responsive. Still talking about the APU, it’s worth considering, even after the purchase, the dedicated graphics cards with AMD Dual Graphics support, many of the models, by the way, with passive cooler implementations. It can be the difference if a certain game will run or not, since there will be two GPUs working in a hybrid way. And that’s why we selected a power supply with more power, capable of handling future upgrades.
